What is an Artist’s Proof, or AP?
An Artist’s Proof, or AP is the version that the artist will proof against when printing a limited edition print run. There is usually 1 AP for every 10 editions printed. So for a print run of 50, there will be 5 AP’s and so on. Collectors will often obtain AP’s for their rarity over the standard editions.
What is a Limited Edition Print?
A Limited Edition is a single run of a fixed amount of prints. This can be 20 or 200, but each print is individual and is numbered as such. For example, 10/100 would indicate edition number 10 from a total print run of 100 editions. Once the fixed amount of prints has been run, the plates are usually destroyed in order to preserve the value of the existing work.
What is a Screen print?
Screen printing is a technique that dates back to the Middle Ages and was believed to be first used in China. It first appeared in Europe in the 1930’s, but became more mainstream, made fashionable most notably by Andy Warhol, in America during the 1960’s. The process begins with a screen of porous, finely woven fabric, which was traditionally silk, but today is usually polyester. This screen is stretched over a frame and areas of the screen are blocked with a stencil of non porous material, this then becomes a positive of the area to be printed, or the open spaces where the ink will be absorbed into the paper. The screen is then placed on top of the paper and the ink is placed on top of the screen. The ink is moved through the fabric using a rubber blade and usually left to dry overnight. This process is repeated for each different colour, with a separate stencil being created by the artist for each colour.
What is a Giclee print?
A Giclee, or an Inkjet print, is produced from a digital image file by a computer driven printer that sprays minute droplets of ink onto the paper. The development of stable, archival inks and dedicated papers is ensuring the popularity of this medium. Giclee is a French term and literally translates to 'little squirt'.
